Life Goes on: Adult Poetry Concerned With Life Situations from Birth to Death
Published in Hardcover by Stonehaven Pub (August, 1987)
Author: Eugene L. Vickery
Average review score:

Thoughtful, meaningful, and riviting poetry that inspired me
This slim volume of poetry is, like Sandburg and Whittman, very readable and completely accessable, even for those who do not, ordinarily, find themselves drawn to poems. Each, of the more than 85 pieces, is a precious and intimate view of the many stages of Life, from birth to beyond death, that illuminates and inspires. Dr. Vickery drew from his own experiences as a country physician, father, and community leader, and imparts a simple, yet abiding wisdom that both children and adults will find to be a valuable tool to living. His insights into all the aspects of existence reveal a clear vision based on an unflawed perception of morality, what has come to be known as "family values". This book, along with another of Dr. Vickery's works, titled "Dad Calls Me Jack", offers a well rounded and thoughtful presentation of a remarkable man and his philosophies. Never pedantic or "preachy", his words are simple, yet direct. His are the words of the wise father or grandfather who imparts his wisdom in an Aesop-like fashion, that is eminently readable because his style is so down-to-earth. One of the clearest things I found in Dr. Vickery's writings, was his love of Life and the people in his life. His flat-out appreciation of Life's many miracles, the great ones like love, birth and faith, as well as the small ones, like the fall of evening, remind me that every moment is cause for celebration and gratitude. What greater gift could any author hope to convey?

Life Supports: New and Collected Poems
Published in Paperback by North Point Press (June, 1983)
Authors: William Bronk and Eugene G. Canade
Average review score:

The most intelligent American poetry of the century...
The metaphysical composure, the simplicity of expression, and the rich austerity of William Bronk's poetry has a power reminiscent of T.S. Eliot, whose ability to reflect on the root questions of our life and civilization he shared. This is poetry that will speak to the prosaic moments of your daily thought, and your sense of reality itself, at the same time. It is poetry that will be read a century from now, and so you should read it now...

Louis XV's Army (1) : Cavalry & Dragoons (Men-At-Arms Series, 296)
Published in Paperback by Osprey Pub Co (July, 1996)
Authors: Rene Chartrand, Eugene Leliepvre, and Eugene Lelliepvre
Average review score:

A La Hussard!
This is an interesting, highly accurate work, as are all of Rene Chartrand's books, which covers a period not usually well-covered, or covered at all. The addition of Maitre Eugene Leliepvre's lively, accurate, and colorful artwork only adds to the value and accuracy.

The early history of French light troops is one of trial and error, fits and starts, that tried to catch up to the excellent light troops of the Austrian army that so troubled the French throughout the early and mid eighteenth century. Here in all their Gallic splendor are the regiments of foreign born hussars, dragoons, uhlans, and whatever else the imaginative, energetic, and not always efficient soldiers thought up to raise and send into the fire in central Europe.

Told in a descriptive and accurate fashion, the book is a must for every afficionado of the period. It is also a very good introduction for the later Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods where the French light troops came into their own and began to dominate battlefields.

The addition of Eugene Leliepvre's superb artwork is a definite plus for the book, and ensures it will be used for years to come. This book belongs on the shelf of every enthusiast of this period and the later Napoleonic and revolutionary periods.

Finally, a Mormon with Social Consciousness
Eugene England's book is beautifully written. He articulates Mormon soical issues in an open and direct way. I was profoundly moved by his ideas and suggestions. He goes a long way towards putting Christ back into the center of Mormon culture. This is a book all latter-day saints should read.

Malory
Published in Unknown Binding by Clarendon P. ()
Author: Eugène Vinaver
Average review score:

THE book for Arthurian scholars or enthusiasts
This is the best version of the Malory tales that I have read. One has to have a grasp of Middle English pronunciation and grammar to follow the text, but with that knowledge, the reader will find Vinaver's text to be supreme. I would recommend this volume to anyone pursuing study in Medieval or Arthurian literature, or the Medieval enthusiast looking for a good read. If I could give it six stars, I would.

Marine Invertebrates of the Pacific Northwest
Published in Hardcover by University of Washington Press (October, 1987)
Author: Eugene N. Kozloff
Average review score:

Excellent set of taxonomic keys to Pac NW invertebrates
Kozloff and Price's set of keys is an excellent tool for collectors and scientists who need to know what they are looking at, and to be sure that they have the right name with the animal in their hand/bucket.

This 8.5" x 11' format book covers marine invertebrate phyla down to the species level for animals found from southern Oregon to the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, Canada. As such, it makes a great companion set of keys to "Light's Manual: Intertidal Invertebrates of the Central California Coast" by Smith and Carlton, and "Marine Algae of California" by Abbott and Hollenberg. That set of 3 books is a treasure for people who need good taxonomic information on nearshore marine life to support what they do along the pacific coast of North America.

Back to Kozloff's book...the book has the keys themselves, as well as supporting BW photographs and great line drawings to help the reader interpret particularly sticky parts of the keys. There are also brief occasional notes about known ranges of some animals covered, but this is not a reference book to the ecology of these animals, it is an excellent set of taxonomic keys.

The book is a reprint of a 1987 publication. As such some names of taxonomic groups have changed in the intervening 13 years. Nevertheless, this book remains the best set of keys for this region that we have.

Maryland Landscapes of Eugene Leake
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (October, 1986)
Author: Craig Hankin
Average review score:

A sensitive and intelligent look at the paintings of Leake
Craig Hanken has given us a magnificent book on landscape painting written as a reflection of how paintings and a body of work develop over time. As a former student of the artist, I am continually taken with Leake's ability to use a narrow palette of color, and sometimes the same landscape over and over, to express an amazing range and depth of feeling about the landscape. This book is a joy to read and to use as a resource - Leake explains his use of color and choice of locations in terms that the general specator can appreciate and the student can try an emulate. The numerous images are well chosen and well reproduced. A classic.

Mathematical Methods for Physicists and Engineers
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 1999)
Author: Royal Eugene Collins
Average review score:

A very helpful book
This book presents to the lector in a comprehensive way the necesary mathematical methods needed by any physicist, engineer or student. It includes themes such as elementary vector calculus, matrix algebra and transformations, a very extensive study of boundary value problems, elementary applicationsof the Laplace Tansform, Integral Transforms, Variation and Perturbation Methods, Elements of Probability Theory, among others. Each point is well exposed, with many explamples and problems (although it doesn't provide the answers). A defect may be the fact that some points (although few) are not fully developed, and in some cases one will probably have to read a more basic-level book on those points (As a freshman, it happened to me that to understand chapters 7 and 8, about functions of a comples variable and calculus of residues, I had to read an introductory book on complex variable). It's develop of many math topics and it's application to Physics and Engineering and the independance of many chapters from the others, makes this book a very helpful one.
